Avoid November Naughtiness, Stay Motivated This Winter

We’re on the home stretch to Christmas, and as the days get shorter, the nights colder, and the food more plentiful, it can be a real challenge to muster up the energy to stay motivated and give your workout regime the commitment and the positive energy that it deserves. Whilst we totally understand your woes, we’re here today to tell you to avoid a naughty November and to embrace the wonders of the Winter workout. Those outdoor exercise sessions are far too important to stop now, even in the colder weather, and luckily for you we have a few little tricks that’ll have you up off the sofa quicker than you can say “just one more mince pie…”

Before and afters…

No, we’re not talking about those hideously Photoshopped “before and after” shots on advertisements for questionably effective weight loss supplements; we’re talking about real life imagery of your pre-workout state – whether that’s video footage of your technique when you were just starting out or images of your old body-shape. Don’t underestimate the motivational power of seeing just how far you’ve come in all its cringe-worthy glory!

Keep the playlist fresh…

If there’s one thing that can make a workout feel a little monotonous/repetitive it’s a stale workout playlist. As mentioned in one of our previous blog posts, good tunes can work wonders on your motivation and refreshing your selection of bangers when you feel them start to drag is more impactful than you might think. Christmas is just a few weeks away, why not throw in a few of the more upbeat Crimbo numbers for a burst of festive motivation.

Set targets and challenges…

We’ve arrived at one of the simpler methods available to those struggling with their get-up-and-go – a technique that the more competitive among you will find especially useful. Giving yourself challenges and targets will offer something quantifiable to work towards, and by setting your deadline near the end of Winter you’ll ensure your workout regime continues throughout the colder months without any little hiccups. Perhaps even consider signing up to a charity run/workout that takes place around your target’s deadline to really up your drive and keep you motivated.

Book plenty of classes…

Now we may be a little biased here, but embracing the great British winter by booking yourself onto some well-run outdoor workout classes is a tried and tested way to improve your commitment to your workouts. Having a few classes in the diary will add a level of formality to your regime; giving you set dates to focus on and taking any session planning or admin out of the equation, meaning all you really need to do is turn up. Easy, right?

Invest in the right gear…

It may seem like an obvious one, but you’d be surprised at how many people underestimate the importance of season-suitable gear. Investing in some good quality winter-appropriate active wear will make those cold-weather workouts much more pleasurable – in turn making you much more motivated and less likely to back out. Aim for items of clothing that can be added and removed easily during your workout, and ensure they’re light enough to be tied around the waist or thrown in a rucksack without effecting your technique. It’s all about the layers!
